Why Community Matters

Community is the thread that brings people together. Community matters because it creates a sense of purpose, builds social connections, and offers a support network

Many different types of communities exist. Some groups have more of a structure, such as religious organizations, co-op organizations, parent-teacher associations, trade organizations, governments, and health care organizations. Others—like social networks, study groups, and groups of close friends—are more informal. Follow the link below to see a few types of community you can join.

REFECTION CORNER: Here are some quotes and interest facts for reflection

“Do the things that interest you and do them with all your heart. Don't be concerned about whether people are watching you or criticizing you. The chances are that they aren't paying any attention to you. It's your attention to yourself that is so stultifying. But you have to disregard yourself as completely as possible. If you fail the first time then you'll just have to try harder the second time. After all, there's no real reason why you should fail. Just stop thinking about yourself.”

Mindfulness can be described as being aware of your actions and your surroundings. It's about being present in the moment and taking note of what's going on around you. Being mindful is about noticing the distant sound of a car, or the weight of the keys under your finger tips as you type. It's about being aware of what you are doing and not being overly reactive or overwhelmed by what's going on around you.

Spirituality and mindfulness have been intertwined throughout human history. Many religions make use of mindfulness practices and have done so for thousands of years. Mindfulness has been associated with Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Distractions are everywhere. Have you ever found yourself scrolling mindlessly on your phone, while watching Netflix?

With all these modern distractions, redirecting your focus and training your mind so that you can focus on a single task is sometimes needed.

Mindfulness training can be a handy strategy to use with clients who mindlessly eat at their desks at work, or in the evenings while watching YouTube videos.

“Time isn’t precious at all, because it is an illusion. What you perceive as precious is not time but the one point that is out of time: the Now. That is precious indeed. The more you are focused on time — past and future — the more you miss the Now, the most precious thing there is.”

Mindfulness techniques can be used to calm stress, clear the mind, reduce anxiety and improve happiness. If you're a health coach, fitness coach, teacher or parent, understanding how to use mindfulness strategies can be very useful.

  1. Meditation
  2. Reciting daily affirmations
  3. Breathing techniques
  4. Grounding
  5. Exercise
  6. Journaling

Can you think of any more...?

“Be where you are; otherwise, you will miss your life.”

“Mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience. It isn't more complicated than that. It is opening to or receiving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without either clinging to it or rejecting it.”

“One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious. The latter procedure, however, is disagreeable and therefore not popular.”

“Mindfulness meditation doesn't change life. Life remains as fragile and unpredictable as ever. Meditation changes the heart's capacity to accept life as it is.”

“The mind is like water. When it is turbulent it's difficult to see. When it's calm, everything becomes clear.”
